Hi everyone, and on behalf of Dr. Jordan Travis Radke welcome to the Engaged Journalism: Guns in Schools course! We have a great block planned, and look forward to working with all of you.
Would you mind posting a comment below with some introductory information?
Name and pronouns -
Where are your from?
What are you studying here at Colorado College and/or what are you interested in academically?
What are you hoping to get out of the Engaged Journalism course?
Hi! My name is Miranda Dickerman (she/her/hers) and I am from San Francisco. I haven't decided on a major at CC yet - so far I have taken three Russian blocks and an education block. I'm really excited for this block and I hope to learn more about journalism and community engagement and to strengthen my writing skills.
Hi! I'm Susie Dummit (she/her/hers) & I'm a freshman from Westchester, NY. I'm planning to major in political science with a minor in journalism. I've always been super interested in journalism and have written different articles for various different things but I've never actually taken a formal journalism course so I'm excited to start!
Hello! I am Ella de Bruijn, and I am a freshman at CC. I use the pronouns she/her/hers. I am from Fairfield County in Connecticut, but I have always loved the West and the Rocky Mountains. I plan on majoring in Environmental Science at CC, but I also really like art! I have never taken a journalism class, so I am really looking forward to trying something new and perhaps finding another academic passion. I am hoping to gain a better understanding of journalism as a whole, how it differs around the world, and how I can stay engaged in both the local community and the whole world! Additionally, I would really like to work on my writing. I look forward to meeting everyone and for a great block!
Hello all. My name is Grace Perry (she/her/hers), and I'm a senior at CC. I am originally from Washington, DC. I am a Sociology major and a double minor in Spanish and Journalism. I am really excited to learn more about community-based/activist journalism and get the chance to work alongside PBS-a long time hero of mine!
Hi there! My name is Amy Bolton (she/her/hers) and I am a senior Economics major. I am from Massachusetts. I am taking this course because I am excited about the community engagement and working with PBS. Additionally, I want to learn more about journalism and writing.
Hi! I'm Logan & I'm a freshman at CC. I am from Los Angeles and am interested in majoring in English on the creative writing fiction track. I've dabbled a little bit in journalism before, but I'd like to dive deeper into it, since I can see myself taking great interest in it. Also, I also cannot wait to work alongside PBS. It is such an exciting, cool opportunity.
Hi, everyone! My name is Bridget (they/them/theirs) and I am a second year from Denver. I haven't declared a major just yet, but I am leaning toward math-econ. I'm also really interested in documentary filmmaking and generally I enjoy the various ways that knowledge can be transferred. As such, I am excited to take this class to learn more about journalism and also to collaborate with PBS!
Heya! I'm Hollis, and I'm from Chestertown, MD (close to Delaware, not super interesting lol). I use they/them pronouns and I'm very interested in Comparative Literature as a major because I would like to pursue editing/publishing. I'm not sure yet what I'd like to get out of this course, but I was very interested about helping out in the community because I know that CC is a little at odds with the more conservative Colorado Springs!
Hey, my name is Liza Bering. I am a junior at CC and I am majoring in geology with intent to minor in feminist and gender studies. I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. I am currently enrolled in this course because I know nothing about journalism and would like to learn more about it. I am also interested in learning about the presence of guns in schools as it is a VERY prevalent topic right now. I also think collaborating with PBS could be cool.
Hullo I'm Blythe DeBeer (she/her/hers) from London. I'm hoping to major in practical Film, specifically cinematography, and minor in Russian and perhaps something else that comes my way. Over the next month, I'd like to learn how to humanise media a bit, in order to better use it as a tool for facilitating empathy. Stoked to get started!
Hey there! I'm Michael Gorman (he/him/his) from Bethesda, Maryland. I'm intending to major in Race, Ethnicity, and Migration studies and I'm minoring in Journalism. Very keen to learn more about gun violence through journalism so I can help let more people know what's going on!
Hi Y'all. My name is Nina Goodkin (she/her/hers). I am a freshman from Charlottesville, VA. I enjoy writing and psychology, but do not know what I will be majoring in. Through this class, I am hoping to better understand the role of the responsible journalist especially in the current era and to tighten up my writing skills.
Hi all! I'm Ines Siepmann (she/her/hers) from Afton, Minnesota. I'm a biochemistry major with German and global health minors, and am very interested in public health. I was drawn to this class because of the topic, which was briefly discussed in a Sociology of Body and Health block I took last year. I'm particularly interested in the connection of topics such as this one and how they affect the general wellbeing of those affected, and think that the collaboration should be really exciting!
Hello! I'm Oliver Jones (he/him/his) from Kirkland, Washington. I am a Computer Science major, Environmental Issues minor, and study foreign languages and history whenever I can. I'm very excited for this course because of the opportunity to study areas that are fairly new to me -- journalism and guns in schools - and because of the collaboration with PBS. I'm very interested in learning more about how journalism shapes our perception of the world around us!
Hello! I'm Alex Donahue (she/her/hers) from Hingham, Massachusetts. I am a second year Neuroscience major with a Journalism minor. I am excited to be in this class because of the concept of engaged journalism--I fear that if journalists don't engage with citizens more then journalism will become increasingly polarized from its citizens. Working with PBS and exploring the topic of guns in schools seems incredibly relevant and important.
Hey everyone! My name is Isabella McShea (She/Her/Hers) and I am from Seattle, Washington. I am a Junior at CC studying Sociology, Global Health, and Economics. I am particularly interested in how public health centered businesses can help solve social inequalities within the United States. I am hoping to write my sociology thesis on a prominent public health problem and gun violence is an intriguing topic for me. I hope to gain more information about how to use community based research approaches and also more fully understand the scope and breadth of how guns in U.S. schools has evolved over time.
